The memory of The Desbandà A tragic episode of the Spanish Civil War, hidden in oblivion for decades, has begun to gain greater visibility in recent years. Between February 6 and 8, 1937, thousands of people were caught in a brutal attack by the rebel side as they fled the city of Málaga, heading for Almería. It is estimated that between 3.000 and 5.000 people died in this attack directed primarily against civilians and militiamen.

The memory of La Desbandà has become an act of historical vindication in recent decades. In 2012, the Andalusian Regional Government declared the Málaga-Almería road As a site of historical memory, and for several years now, an annual 220-kilometer march has been organized to retrace the route taken by the refugees during their tragic escape, in which they were mercilessly bombed by Franco's air force. This march, which seeks to remember the dead and raise awareness of the tragedy, is becoming increasingly well-known and has the support of various towns, such as Xàbia and Benitatxell, which this year have decided to join the commemoration.
These talks are part of a broader campaign to recover and transmit to new generations a historical memory that remains unknown to many. With the participation, on occasion, of survivors This painful episode aims to humanize a tragedy that, despite the passage of time, continues to affect the families of those affected and the towns where this massacre took place.
The community of Xàbia and Benitatxell is preparing to pay tribute to the victims of The Desbandà and to publicize this historical episode which, although painful, is an essential part of our collective memory.

In Xàbia, we're not interested in this story or myth. In our town, more than 40 innocent people were murdered by the Reds, 10 of them from Xàbia. You, Julio, are not and never will be from Xàbia.
