A young diver from 24 years in the Making, a native of Madrid, has required emergency care after suffering decompression sickness during a dive in the Cap Prim area, on the coast of Xàbia.
The incident mobilized a large emergency response that culminated in the transfer of the affected person to the Dénia Hospital.
Activation of the emergency protocol
After detecting the first symptoms of decompression sickness, the diver was quickly transferred to the Fontana Canal, next to the Arenal BeachThere, the diver presented a state of weakness and dizziness, consistent with this type of condition.
The Ministry of Health activated a medical helicopter, which traveled to Xàbia and landed on the emergency helipad designated for these interventions.
Meanwhile, the Red Cross teams began the assistance the young man on land. Rescuers managed to stabilize his condition with subsequent support from a team from the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU).
After receiving initial care and confirming that his progress was favorable, the health services decided to transfer him to the Dénia Hospital by ambulance, so it was not necessary to use the medical helicopter.
What is Decompression Syndrome?
Decompression sickness is a condition that can occur when a diver ascends and the pressure decreases. This causes nitrogen dissolved in the blood and tissues to form bubbles in the body.
Symptoms may include:
- dizziness
- Weakness
- Joint pain
- neurological alterations
- Breathing difficulties
This condition requires immediate medical attention and, in many cases, treatment in a hyperbaric chamber. The rapid response of emergency teams is crucial to reducing the risk of complications and promoting the recovery of those affected.
