"Privatization – or not? – of the desalination plant"

04 June 2025 - 08: 31

OPINION | Circle We can Xàbia

The three-party coalition in Xàbia is opening the door to the management of the desalination plant passing into private hands, and of course, if we have any memory, cases of corruption with embezzlement and bribery come to mind. member linked to other crimes (Gürtel), hiring of associates, bribery, embezzlement, ongoing fraud and corporate crimes.

And all this, only referring to cases that link governments of PP in our community, such as Imelsa (local economic boost), Brugal (management of garbage collection services in several municipalities of Alicante), or Emarsa (metropolitan wastewater company).

Naturally, there's nothing to criticize yet; only the mere suggestion of privatizing a public service that citizens are proud to have, and, moreover, given the disastrous experiences we've just listed, makes us fear that this is yet another attempt to use public funds for personal enrichment, whether through nepotism or any other means we've seen in the aforementioned cases. Furthermore, what usually happens with the privatization of services is that the jobs of work The most qualified – and best paid – jobs usually stay in Madrid or Valencia, while the least qualified or unqualified – and worst paid – jobs stay in Jávea.

The public services They enrich the population, collaboration with private companies is necessary, and it is another enriching element of public activity; companies offer innovation, try to improve the efficiency of services, etc., but also maximize their profits; and lately we have seen too many cases of enrichment at the expense of disinvesting in facilities, and in the long run, creating an infrastructure deficit, which ultimately needs public investment to repair.

For all the above reasons, from Podemos Xàbia we support the desalination plant being managed entirely by AMJASA or a public-private partnership through specialized and specific contracts that enhance municipal staff and address some aspect of the service, thereby improving its quality; and we oppose the privatization of the comprehensive management of an entire service, whether it be Amjasa, the municipal swimming pool, etc.

  1. Manuel says:

The treatment plant has already been privatized (Epsar management awarded to DAM) - will it be the desalination plant?

  2. Stephen Cook says:

Don't privatize! Why? Look at the UK's experience: profits paid to shareholders, which means zero investment, contaminated water, and high bills.

  3. José Antonio says:

I have no doubt that a private company will function better than a public one. It's about making a good contract and then ensuring that it's enforced. It's another matter if public servants or politicians aren't capable of auditing whether the terms of the contract are being met.

  4. Bob Morris says:

The Council had the vision to build a desalination plant that everyone in JAVEA is proud of.
Surrounding local authorities are justifiably envious of the plant.
It not only works for the benefit of all Jávea citizens, we would be in great difficulty without it.
So please let us keep it under our control

  5. Juan says:

Privatize? Sure, you already have the company as a "trusted friend." That's what they mean by privatize.

  6. Richard Rae says:

Privatization would be a disaster for Jávea.

  7. Leslie Disler says:

Look to Britain to see what happens to water management by a private company…..be Masters in your own country even if it means more water charges to get the BEST people to run it.
